Truth in Advertising: Film of the Re-enactment of the 1909 Auto Contest
The Seattle Channel has posted the film of the 1959 re-enactment of the cross country auto race from New York to Seattle. Even though it is a compendium of curious facts about the 1909 event, it is more a great hoot providing amusing views of 1959 American culture.
The film, produced by the Fort Motor Company, perpetrates the myth that car #2, one of Henry Ford’s Model T’s, won the race. The film is great fun for that fact alone. While The Ford Motor Company marketed its purported win all over the United States from June 1909 on, we all know that the Shawmut was declared the official winner in November of that year. Rather than choke up our server space, we’ve simply shared the link to the Seattle Channel where you can watch all 20 minutes when you have the time for some good old fashioned American laughs.
